Hair Tissue Analysis for Horses

A hair analysis is a scientific test which accurately measures the mineral content for over 30 different minerals in the hair using atomic absorption methods.

Mineral content of the hair reflects the mineral content of the body’s tissues. It can also indicate whether that mineral is bioavailable to the cells and tissues.

Hair mineral analyses are also very accurate in determining the levels of toxic heavy metals – a problem which is becoming all too common in an ever-increasing toxic world. Toxic metals such as mercury, aluminum, arsenic, lead, strontium, and sometimes iron can have a profound impact on health and can be very destructive. Routine blood tests cannot detect chronic heavy-metal poisoning; however, tissue mineral analysis, using atomic absorption, is considered an accurate method.

A mineral hair analysis can also reveal a variety of different nutritional and health problems as well as the status of many organs and glands, including the liver and kidneys, as well as thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal gland function. It can pinpoint digestive problems, blood sugar imbalances, anemia, inflammation and stress levels.

A hair analysis can detect these imbalances and problems, where often conventional blood testing cannot.

Nutritional physiology takes place at the cellular level, not in the blood. Blood levels of nutrients and minerals are kept within very narrow limits by the body and are slow to change. Thus, blood levels are not a true reflection of the nutrient status within the tissues, organs and glands which are all often depleted before the blood is. In contrast, tissue mineral analysis provides information about cellular activity within the tissues and the metabolism of all nutrients throughout the body.

Common underlying causes of mineral imbalances and organ dysfunction are unsuitable feed programs, mal-digestion of feed, nutrient deficiencies, medications, stress, and the accumulation of toxic or heavy metals.

Your horse’s hair tissue mineral analysis results will include a complete written report prepared by Marijke based on your individual case, along with the laboratory bar graph which shows the values of over 30 minerals and elements, 8 toxic heavy metals and 15 mineral ratios. Hair analysis is an invaluable screening tool which guides diet and feed choices and a recommended supplement program for optimum health and wellness.

NOTE: For horses with chronic laminitis it is highly recommended to either start with or include the full horse Health Consultation with the Hair Analysis. Laminitic horses require a full assessment of blood sugar levels, gut toxicity, diet and nutrition, parasite levels, exercise levels, and a review of the hoof balance and trimming. All of these assessments are included in the full Health Consultation.

“My horse Ginger is doing very well on her new program. Her hair mineral analysis showed that she was having blood sugar problems, had low thyroid function, was anemic, and had multiple mineral deficiencies. After starting her on the program she is showing wonderful improvements. She has lost fat pads and increased her muscle mass. Her energy is so much better now and her attitude has also improved immensely – she is much more like her old self of a couple of years ago. She is even less “marish” toward the geldings.”

Preparing a Hair Sample

Take a hair sample that weighs approximately 125 mg (about ½ Tablespoon) as close to the skin as possible from the base of the mane.

  • The hair should be no longer than 1-1/2 inches.
  • Cut the extra length off and keep the 1-1/2 inch section which was closest to their skin.
  • Wash the testing area with rubbing alcohol and let dry completely before taking the sample.
