Hair Tissue Analysis for People

A hair analysis is a scientific test which accurately measures the mineral content of the hair using atomic absorption methods.

Mineral content of the hair reflects the mineral content of the body’s tissues. If a mineral deficiency or excess exists in the hair, it usually indicates a mineral deficiency or excess within the body, although sometimes it can actually mean the reverse.

It can also indicate whether that mineral is bioavailable to the cells and tissues. Hair mineral analyses are also very accurate in determining the levels of toxic heavy metals – a problem which is becoming all too common in an ever-increasing toxic world. Toxic metals such as mercury, aluminum, arsenic and/or lead can have a profound impact on health and can be very destructive.

Routine blood tests cannot detect chronic heavy-metal poisoning; however, tissue mineral analysis, using atomic absorption, is considered a legitimate method.

A mineral hair analysis can also reveal a variety of different nutritional and health problems as well as the status of many organs and glands, including the liver and kidneys; and thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands. It can detect adrenal dysfunction, digestive disturbances, thyroid and pituitary dysfunction, blood sugar imbalances, anemia, and inflammation.

A hair analysis can detect these imbalances and problems, where often conventional blood testing cannot.

Nutritional physiology takes place at the cellular level, not in the blood. Blood levels of nutrients and minerals are kept within very narrow limits by the body and are slow to change. Thus, blood levels are not a true reflection of the nutrient status within the tissues, organs and glands which are all often depleted before the blood is.

In contrast, tissue mineral analysis provides information about cellular activity within the tissues and the metabolism of all nutrients throughout the body.

Common causes of a mineral imbalance are poor diet, mal-digestion of foods, nutrient deficiencies, medications, stress, and/or the accumulation of toxic or heavy metals.

Your hair tissue mineral analysis results will include a complete written report prepared by Marijke based on your individual case, along with the laboratory bar graph which shows the values of over 30 minerals and elements, 8 toxic heavy metals and 15 mineral ratios.

Hair analysis is an invaluable screening tool which guides diet and food choices and a recommended supplement program for optimum health and wellness.

“I am so glad that I had this done. I learned that I had toxic mercury above acceptable levels, and that my iron, vitamin B12 and selenium levels were low. It also showed very low adrenal function which explains my fatigue and my stress levels. I am now on a solid nutritional program and am already feeling the results!”

– L.A. (Vancouver, B.C.)

“My hair analysis results showed that my system was really high in acids and low in calcium, boron and sulphur. No wonder I had so much joint pain! I am now on a new diet and taking the right supplements.”

– R.M. (Edmonton, Alberta)

Preparing a Hair Sample

We need approximately 125 mg (about ½ Tablespoon) cut from the nape of the neck. The hair should be no longer than 1 to 1-1/2 inches so be sure to cut off the ends of any hair that is longer than this and keep the hair sample that was cut closest to the skin.  The hair should be dry and the sample should be taken between 4 and 24 hours after washing.

Most shampoos, rinses, conditioners, tints, sprays and other hair products do not affect the test. If the hair has been colour treated it is best to wash the hair at least 6-8 times after the treatment before sampling. After a permanent or bleach treatment it is best to wait until 6-8 weeks to let the hair grow out.

If head hair is not available you may use pubic hair or other body hair, however do not mix head hair with body hair in the same sample. Do not use an electric shaver.
